It is a three-terminal positive regulator. The L7805CD2T is a widely used linear voltage regulator.  It has built-in current limiting, thermal shutdown, and safe operating area protection which makes them virtually immune to damage from output overloads.
Voltage sources in a circuit may have fluctuations, resulting in voltage outputs that are not constant. The output voltage of a voltage regulator IC is constant. 7805 Voltage Regulator, a member of 78xx series of fixed linear voltage regulators used to maintain such fluctuations, is a popular voltage regulator integrated circuit. The output voltage is indicated by the xx in 78xx. The 7805 IC provides a regulated +5 volt power supply with space for a heat sink.
